Canvas Rolls – a budget friendly option for Acrylic or Oil painting Artist?

After recently moving to Canada and leaving behind most of my art supplies in India, It was difficult to kick-start my career and passion as an Artist. I was only allowed to take two baggage from India to Canada. It was hard to pick things and to sacrifice my big canvas paintings.

As I am living here from the last 3 months, I explored local art supply shops and Art brands here, like Micheal and Staples. To my surprise, Art supplies here cost you triple the price in India.

Of course, you can dream of becoming an Artist after getting your first paycheck (Hurray)!!!

During my last three years in India, I had tried canvas rolls, pre- stretched Canvas, Canvas Pads, Canvas Boards and Un-primed Canvas.

Canvas Rolls gives you the flexibility to choose your own canvas size. Besides its low cost, it is easy to store and carry before and after the painting is finished.

I start my paintings by choosing canvas size as it can alter the budget completely.

I prefer canvas size between 2′ x 3′ to 3′ x 4′.

If you want to give that traditional antique touch to your paintings by putting a frame around its border, then Canvas Rolls are definitely the best choice.

What are Canvas Rolls?

It is a type of un-stretched Canvas which is available either unprimed, primed or double primed in different lengths and width.
You can use hardboard as backing and frame it to give it that antique look. They are available in both cotton and linen, linen is more expensive.

Here, I am going to share why canvas rolls could be a budget-friendly choice for you.

Especially, when you are thinking of making a shift towards oil or acrylic paintings as a beginner and you are tired of those expensive pre-stretched canvases.

Less is More

You might have heard about the famous quote ‘Less is more’.

This quote applies here when you buy supplies in bulk.

BUT?

What if I can’t decide the size and cost of Canvas when I am just starting with a low budget?

From my experience, I feel that an Artist should set up a standard pattern or style for paintings. It will help you to focus as you start your paintings. Also, when putting your paintings for exhibitions, displaying artworks with standard size, themes and colour combination looks more decent and impactful.

I explored an online store where Canvas rolls of different length and width of different prices were available to buy as listed below:

Canvas Roll (Double Primed)

1’x2′  for  12$

5’x 2′ for 30$

10′ x 2′ for 40$

25′ x 2′ for 60$

50′ x 2′ for 100$

100’x  2′ for 220$

Which is the best deal?
For me, it is 25′ x 2′ for 60$
Now, my choice depends upon a few factors.

For example,

You have decided to make Canvas Pad of your own size 2.5′ x 2′.
Then,

1st : (1’x2′  for  12$) won’t work for you.

2nd : (5’x 2′ for 30$)
You will get 2 Canvas pads from this roll. One pad cost you 15$.

3rd : (10′ x 2′ for 40$)
You will get 4 Canvas Pads, 10$ each.
You saved 5$ each pad.

4th: (25′ x 2′ for 60$)
You will get 8 Canvas Pads, 7.5$ each.
You saved 2.5$ more hurray.

5th : (50′ x 2′ for 100$)
You will get 20 Canvas Pads for 5$ each.
You saved 2.5$ more. (Oh my god, just look at choice 2)

6th : (100’x  2′ for 220$)
You will get 40 Canvas Pads, 5.5$ each.
Cost you more than 5th.

After analyzing cost per Canvas Pad, definitely 4th (25′ x 2′ for 60$) with 8 pads is an optimum solution to save money and to get more quantity. On the other hand, 5th option (50′ x 2′ for 100$) have 20 pads for 100$. Here, the amount is huge but fair. It all depends upon the Artist choice and necessities.

Next, I am going to compare canvas rolls with Pre-stretched Canvas Board cost:

1’6″ x 2′ for 50$
4 Canvas Boards 12.5$ each

2’x3′ for 50$
2 Canvas Boards, 25$ each

3′ x 4′ for 250$
5 Canvas Boards,50$ each.

This data is enough to understand and compare the two.

Canvas Boards are more than double the price of Canvas Rolls.
They definitely need to be framed which adds up to the budget because, without a frame, it is difficult to hang them and also they bend with time if you will place them on a shelf. I also found that their surface does not feel good while painting. Moreover, they come in fix sizes and bigger canvases are costlier.

I also like pre-stretched Canvas stretched on the wooden frame but they are more the costlier than Canvas Board (Cost varies from brand to brand and also the quality). After completing my paintings, I like to frame them but after spending money on pre-stretched Canvas and then framing it (needs some guts, man). I like to use them for painting as they don’t need any back support but they also come in fix sizes.

Lastly, If you are a beginner or want to try acrylics or oil for the first time then go for canvas pads. They are cheaper than Canvas rolls and you don’t need to cut them. They are similar to drawing books but instead of paper, it has canvas sheets.

Overall, if budget and quantity is your first concern then unstretched Canvas Rolls are better but if you are not concerned about money then stretched canvas can work well for you.

Good luck with your painting.

Happy New Year!!!

Cheers!!!!

Say ‘Yes’ to Eco Friendly Wedding Invitations

Wow, its been a year already! Time flies!

Wedding preparations are full of fun, but they are tiring as well. These moments give you memories for a lifetime. Our weddings are incomplete without the presence of near and dear ones, who are sometimes more excited for your big day than you are. It starts with the stunning wedding invitations, filled with the warmth of your love and excitement. It’s an official announcement of your wedding date and ceremonies to be held.

A traditional card with some sweets and gifts can cheer up everyone’s mood, but why not put some flavor into your wedding with custom invites that reflects your personality? What if your wedding date is just a few weeks away? How to send these invitations? How to reach your uncle and aunt or your best friend living far away from you, in Canada, US or India in just one click? Why not spare some time, energy and money for your wedding shopping, instead of worrying about the invitations?

When my wedding date was fixed, I decided to design my own wedding card. It was an Indian Punjabi style wedding, my card theme and colour choice were also inspired from the traditional Punjabi weddings. As my husband is fond of minimalism and I have a passion for colours, I thought of making it a blend of traditional but modern design with a minimalist approach. I wanted it to reflect both our personalities, minimalist yet cheerful.

The color ‘red’, carried by a married Indian woman, in the form of sindoor, bindi, bangles or by wearing red clothes, is considered to be one of the most auspicious colors for Indian weddings. The ‘circle’ with no defined beginning and ending, is symbolic of never-ending true love. The red circle completes the illustration by highlighting the wedding couple in their wedding attire. Another thing that completes the traditional wedding look of a bride in her red “lehnga” is gold jewellery, considered a blessing of her family. The ‘Golden Yellow’ letters are used as a symbol of golden moments, making the card more special for the occasion.

However things are not as easy as they look, it took me a week to plan and finalize the card design along with everything else going on for the wedding preparations. I used different mediums like acrylic and oils, but they didn’t win me over. Finally, I decided to make an electronic card by using illustration. Interestingly, I combined two different pictures of us into one, it was fun and something new for me. The challenging part was that my husband was my “client”, and it’s difficult to impress him.

Finally, when he said yes, it was time to announce the date of my wedding day. We post it on Instagram, Facebook, WhatApp, and also sent it personally to our friends. Everyone loved the card and the concept. We got tons of wishes for the wedding and appreciations for the card design. We wanted to do something creative on our wedding, and this made our wedding memorable for us..

An e-card is an environmentally friendly way to celebrate your day as it saves the paper for card printing, which in turn can save you money. It saves your time as well, you don’t need to go to the printers to order one as its just a simple message or click away.

They are more fun and creative in my opinion, as they can be customized the way you want. So, take one step further and order an e-card for your wedding ceremony. Whether, its you or your friends engagement, haldi, bangles or wedding ceremony. It is an interesting option, as it can be customized on a whole other level.

Let your invitation glow with your love and emotions!!!

fall

Fall in love with Fall in Canada!!

As Canada has opened its doors for the citizens of any country from around the world, people are excited to live in this beautiful country. Whether you are about to move to Canada, or you are just planning for it in the future, you must be excited to know the things which makes people fall in love with this country. Here is the first reason.

Interestingly, fall in Canada lasts for a few months starting from September till the end of November, but its peak time is just for two weeks and its the best time to explore the outside world before winters. For most Canadians, it is the best time of the year to lost in nature and enjoy its beautiful colors. If you are looking to capture some nature’s beauty with your camera, it is the best time to do so. You will find only Pine, Cedar, and few other evergreen trees who don’t change their color while it is interesting to see transformation of tree leaves like Maple into stunning shades which makes the whole landscape look fabulous with their rich color contrast. The best thing is you don’t need to go far from your place to see it as there are conservation areas or parks in almost every city where you can enjoy this.

This fall, we went to Claireville Conservation Area during its peak season. It is a protected area where you will mostly find deciduous trees that changes their colors into different shades of Yellow, Orange or Red. Tall trees canopies of different colors seem to hug each other, celebrating nature. When sunlight falls through yellow leaves on fallen leaves on the ground, it feels like everything around you has turned golden, making the whole place look more livelier and beautiful. There are dedicated trails for visitors with the freedom to explore the area without any restriction. The site has a river, wetland areas or marshy lands, grasslands as well as other areas where you can eat fresh fruits when you feel hungry. As you have to walk a lot to explore the whole place you must have ample time, good shoes for walking and something to eat. Its a good picnic spot for nature lovers.

We got a chance to explore fall in Muskoka, Ontario, known for its beautiful landscape. We had a long drive from Brampton to Muskoka where we had planned to enjoy other activities like stargazing or watching northern lights at night, but we could not make it due to bad weather. It was an exciting journey where we had the chance to see village life and old Canadian houses architecture on our way. It was a relief from hustle life in cities with no noise pollution. Another interesting thing about our journey was that we found lakes almost every few miles. As it is a tourist place, you can enjoy lots of activities but one day is not enough, so book your accommodation advance during peak season as it is difficult to arrange such things on time.

Do you also like fall season? I hope you are planning to explore a new place in next fall. so tell us in the comment section which is your favourite season in your country and which are the places you had explored during that time? or any other plans?
